*New South Asian Literature course*
FL 295 014: The Power of the Word: Censored & Subversive South Asian
Literature in Translation
This course will provide an overview of important and influential 20th
century South Asian authors and their controversial writings as available
in English translation. We will analyze why these stories have inspired
controversy, the measures that have been taken against them, and the
overall impact that the stories have had in South Asian society. A
critical analysis of these works will provide students with a deeper
understanding of South Asian culture, history and literature. Taught in

For all students interested in enrolling in Intermediate Hindi-Urdu (it
can fulfill your NC State foreign language requirement!), there are now
two sections:
Hindi emphasis: FLN 201 Section 001 and FLN 203 Section 001
Urdu emphasis: FLN 201 Section 002 and FLN 203 Section 002
*Urdu Script*
FL 295 011: Fast Track to Urdu
This course provides a rapid transition to reading and writing in the Urdu
(Arabic-script-based, nastaliq) script for students who have already
acquired the basic grammatical structure of Hindi-Urdu. The course will
also increase students' Urdu vocabulary and highlight important cultural
differences between Hindi and Urdu. Short prose and poetry readings. Dr.
Christine Everaert, W 11:20 AM-1:10 PM. (Note that “Fast Track to Hindi”
script will be offered in Spring 2011)
